Norm’s Notes                                                                                                                 March 1, 2018

Gone to their eternal home

Paul Belpasso’s Celebration of Life was last Saturday. Ten people spoke at the service about Paul’s impact on their lives. He had been a part of Bethlehem Marketplace for all of its 28 years, hand making the leather medallions given to everyone who walked through the Marketplace. I would think he made 12-15,000 of these pieces over the years. He hand made several of the sandals the cast wore in the city as well. He was the main person setting up the manger scene in recent years and when we remade the entire city seven years ago he was a key part of that.

Several years ago Fairview had a ministry to college age young adults. We called it “The Hill” because Paul and Diane gave us, rent free, the use of their building at the top of Hoosier Hill. Well done, Paul.

Billy Graham

I accepted Christ at a Billy Graham film at my little Baptist Church in East Leroy, Michigan. It was an old fashioned reel to reel movie. I went through his entire New Believer’s Course, which in those days was mailed to their headquarters. One of the events my little farm kids youth group would do in the early 1960s was to gather in front of a black and white TV and listen to the Billy Graham crusades, sitting on the floor eating pop corn and drinking Mountain Dew. You got only three channels on TV in the good old days and had to get up from the couch to change the channel (no remote control). And sometimes you had to go outside to turn the aerial just right to get better reception. When I graduated from high school in 1966, one of the things I asked for was Billy Graham’s book “World Aflame” – the first book I actually ever read from cover to cover. I still have that book. I spent a whole week at the Billy Graham Crusade at McCormick Place in Chicago in 1971. They put us up in hotels, classes all day, crusade at night. It was life changing.

Linda and I went to the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, North Carolina the first year it was open. In my generation, no one has impacted the world for Christ like Billy Graham. Well done. Very well done.

Billy Graham’s funeral is tomorrow, March 2. You can watch it live here. The funeral starts at noon, live feed begins at 10:00 a.m.
