Stories of people God has brought across my path recently.
1. Memories of Wall Lake Tavern – While filling up my truck with gas, a vehicle pulled up in the lane next to me. The guy got out and asked, sir, do you know where Wall Lake Tavern is? I told him, yes, I do. He told me that Wall Lake Tavern had the best walleye and he needed a walleye supper (it was 7 p.m.) I told him how to get there (go west from the outlet mall 15 miles to Orland). You are asking how I know where Wall Lake Tavern is. In the late 1970’s we used to have baptismal services at Wall Lake because one of our deacons lived there. When we put the directions in the bulletin we said it was at the third house past the tavern (that was before GPS). That conversation brought back memories.
2. Breaking Eggs – Linda and I recently had a group of relatively new attenders to our house in an effort to create a new small group. These times are always very good. Every couple makes a four-page book about themselves at these gatherings and one of the questions for the book is, what was your first job. The most unique first job I have ever heard about was one person used to break open eggs that were used at bakeries. She’d grab them from a conveyor belt, three in each hand, break them open and separate the white, the yolk, and the shell all while smelling for rotten ones. Try that some time. This was back in the 1950’s and she was 15 years old at the time.
3. Some people I would like to meet for another small group – single parents, moms or dads with kids between the ages of 5 and 12 (give or take a few years). You are invited to an introductory meeting on Sunday, June 4 at 10:30 in room S101 (library). You may bring your kids with you or have them go to children’s ministry. 4. New attenders – I like meeting new attenders. I saw a couple last Sunday, first time at FMC. They knew all the songs. They have kids so I introduced them to Jessica, our children’s director.
