Norm’s Notes                                                                                         May 3, 2017

In my Wednesday night small church we have been listening to a series by Andy Stanley called “In the Meantime, What to do when there is nothing you can do”. This is very good. In dvd 3 he uses an illustration I had never thought of before. The Apostle Paul has been walking with God for about ten years, spreading the gospel all around the Mediterranean world. Paul, after ten years of being God’s servant, is put in prison in Rome with nothing to do except sit there. He could be put to death at any moment. Instead of just wasting his time in jail, Paul decides to write letters to his friends he has made in other cities. These four letters became known to us as the Prison Epistles – Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon. He writes one copy of each letter and gives the letters to four different friends to be delivered to four different cities about 800 miles away. Delivered by foot or horseback or maybe by boat; no one really knows. But we do know there was not email, copy machines or mass transit.

There is no way that Paul could have known what God would do with those four letters. They would become a part of our Bible and a part of the most widely read letters in all the history of literature. These four prison letters would be translated into over 600 languages. Just four letters written when in a prison cell when there was nothing else to do.

When you feel like giving up and quitting and you don’t know what to do next, I encourage you to keep walking with your Savior. You never know what little things you do that will impact others, maybe the whole world.
